Seminar on Harm Reduction Approaches

Friday 28th May 2004

A seminar on Harm Reduction Approaches was held on Friday 28th May 2004 in the Hogan Mezzanine, Croke Park to coincide with the release of the latest NACD Report "A Review of Harm Reduction Approaches in Ireland and Evidence from the International Literature." The Review was undertaken by a team from Dublin City University headed by Mr Gerry Moore during late 2002 up to July 2003.

The Seminar was opened by the Minister of State with responsibility for the National Drug Strategy, Mr Noel Ahern T.D. Four guest speakers were invited. Mr Gerry Moore presented on "the Review and the findings from primary research carried out among Irish drug services". His presentation was followed by Prof. Avril Taylor from the University of Paisley in Scotland who presented on "Injecting practices of drug users in Glasgow and risk for Hepatitis C"*. Dr David Temple from the Welsh School of Pharmacy, Cardiff University then presented on "Factors in the development of a community pharmacy-based needle exchange scheme". Dr Jean Long completed the day with a presentation on the "Need for and availability of harm reduction in Irish prisons." Workshops were held to facilitate greater discussion in small groups and notes were taken which will be compiled and circulated to those in attendance.

* unable to post up presentation from Prof Avril Taylor
