To conduct a national longitudinal study, designed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and other intervention strategies used in Ireland for Opiate Dependence Syndrome with adult opiate users.

Tender awarded to NUI Maynooth.Dr Catherine Comiskey and Dr Gemma Cox are leading a team from NUI Maynooth in collaboration with the Centre for Drug Misuse Research in Glasgow to carry out this national longitudinal study, designed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and other intervention strategies used in Ireland for Opiate Dependence Syndrome with adult opiate users.
Progress:
The Research Outcome Study in Ireland Evaluating drug treatment effectiveness (ROSIE) recruited 404 opiate users entering treatment. A report outlining Baseline data has been submitted and is under consideration by the NACD. One-year outcome data has been analysed and prepared for publication. To date 4 bulletins have been produced with two more expected by the end of 2007. The Baseline data and technical information will also be published on the website in 2007.
The NACD has agreed to extend the ROSIE study to include a year 3 follow up phase which will provide 3-year trend data for analysis.
Completion date:
The final report containing three-year outcome data is due December 2007.

ROSIE Findings 1: Summary of 1-year outcomes
Dissemination:
This bulletin was released in September 2006 and a briefing seminar held to disseminate the findings. 2,000 copies of the report were printed due to the wide interest in the report’s findings. A copy went to the Minister of State, Mr Noel Aherne. The publication was circulated to key audiences and stakeholders such as the IDG, NDST, Local and Regional Drugs Task Forces, service providers and other interest groups. Copies are available on the web or from the office.
