General Population Survey of Drug Use 2002/2003
Research brief:
To measure the extent and pattern of drug use in the general population
on the island of Ireland. This is a collaborative project with Northern
Ireland Drug and Alcohol Information and Research Unit at the Department
of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.
Tender awarded to:
Tender awarded to MORI MRC.
Progress:
The population survey will report prevalence and continuation rates
of the most common illicit drugs in the general population by gender
and age groups; assess cross country relationships between general patterns
of use of illicit and licit drugs; and assess relationships between
particular population attributes and the use of illicit drugs.
The survey was carried out between October 2002 and April 2003 using
a pre-prepared questionnaire (based on the EMCDDA model questionnaire)
and face-to-face interviews among the 15 - 64 age group normally resident
in households in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Participants were interviewed
on use of all drug types including alcohol, tobacco, prescribed drugs
and illegal drugs. Information on lifetime use, last year and last month
use were just some of the issues explored.
The response rate in the survey was 70% in Ireland and 63% in Northern
Ireland. The final achieved sample was 8,442 (4,925 in Ireland and 3,517
in Northern Ireland).
