Drug Use Amongst Homeless People
Research brief:
On request of the Minister of State with responsibility for the National Drug Strategy
the NACD was asked to assess the nature and extent of drug misuse among the homeless in Ireland.
Tender awarded to:
The Tender was awarded to the Mr Dermot Kavanagh, Research Department of
Merchants Quay Ireland.
Progress:
The Research Advisory Group comprises representatives from key
stakeholders involved in the planning and delivery of homeless
and drug treatment services. This group
approved the project objectives document and assisted in the
design of the research instrument. The fieldwork commenced in
early 2003 and finished in October 2003.
Final Report has been published by the NACD and recommendations
have been made to Government.
Published:
April 2005.
Dissemination:
The report was released in April 2005 and a briefing
seminar held to disseminate the findings. Two thousand copies
of the
report were printed due to the wide interest in the report’s
findings. A copy went to the Minister of State, Mr Noel Aherne.
The publication was circulated to key audiences and stakeholders
such as the IDG, NDST, Local and Regional Drugs Task Forces,
service providers and other interest groups. Copies are available
on the web or from the office.
