Research Brief:
To examine the structures of mental health and addiction services and how they experience and manage dual diagnosis.

Tender awarded to:

The Tender was awarded to Mr Liam Mc Gabhann, School of Nursing, Dublin City University.

Progress:

The project started in November 2002 and approval for the project objectives document was given in early 2003. The research advisory group comprised one external expert non-member of the NACD and members of the treatment sub committee. The fieldwork was carried out between March 2003 and September 2003 starting first with an Open Forum in one health board are to tease out issues. This combined with the literature review and tender brief informed the research survey instrument. Telephone interviews were also held with a number of service providers to gain additional insights. Data analysis is now completed and a first draft report is with the research advisory group for consideration and feedback. The Final Report has been published by the NACD and recommendations have been made to Government.

Published:
November 2004.

Dissemination: Extensive dissemination has taken place including to Mental Health groups and Addiction groups including Drug Task Forces. Copies of the report are available on the web or from the office.
