Cocaine Use in Ireland

Research brief:
To collect and examine the available data on cocaine in Ireland with a view to advising Government on the issue.

Tender awarded to:
There was no tender issued for this. The work was carried out by staff and committee members of the NACD.

Progress:
Three months was allowed for the data collection from September 2002 to November 2002. However, it was not possible to draw together all the data within that timeframe and it was extended to early 2003. Data was gathered from a wide range of sources such as drug treatment, Garda seizure data, interviews with cocaine users and a brief supporting literature review was carried out. A report was prepared for the NACD, amended and submitted to Government in April 2003.

Published:
December 2003.

Dissemination:
The report was released in December 2003 and a half morning seminar held to disseminate the findings. A copy went to the Minister of State , Mr Noel Ahern. About 1,500 copies of the report were printed such was the wide interest in the issue. The publication was circulated to key audiences and interested groups such as the Interdepartmental group on drugs (IDG), the National Drug Strategy Team (NDST), local and regional drug task forces, service providers and other interest groups to name a few. Copies of the report are available on the web
