Capture Recapture Method 3-Source Study
Research brief:
To provide statistically valid estimates on the prevalence of opiate drug users in
Ireland during 2000.
Tender awarded to:
Dr Alan Kelly, University of Dublin, Trinity College
Progress:
The Capture Recapture Study is designed to estimate the prevalence of opiate use
using several data sources. In this case the study will use three existing datasets:
HIPE (Hospital In-Patient Enquiry), the CMTL (Central Methadone Treatment List)
and the Garda database of known drug users.
Having satisfied the requirements of the Data Protection Commissioner Dr Kelly received the
data from the hospitals following approval from Hospital Ethics Committees. Relevant data
from the CMTL and the Garda study was also received. Analysis is completed and preliminary
findings were published in May 2003.
Published:
Full report published in March 2004.
Dissemination:
A Prevalence Seminar was hosted by the NACD in Citywest,
Co. Dublin in May 2003 to which 125 people were invited to attend (approx
98 attended).Presentations were made by a range of speakers and workshops
were held to facilitate discussion of issues. The publication was circulated
to key audiences and interested groups such as the IDG, NDST, local and
regional drug task forces to name a few. A copy of the report is available
on the web.
